Sokoke Cats - Temperament
Sokoke cats have retained the characteristics of the wild animals, such as independence, self-assurance, pride and intelligence. They form close bonds with humans and are very sensitive to the mood of the owner. They lack aggression and will never bite; they just mark with teeth or claws, if they don't like rough play. They are not lap cats and should not be persuaded to sleep peacefully, if they want to run and play.
Sokoke cats like to be with people and are very communicative; they are almost dog-like. They should not be left alone for a long time. They possess a rather strong voice and understand their owners. Females in heat can make very loud noises. These cats are very active and, unlike the majority of cats, they like to swim. A Sokoke cat feels better if it is kept in groups and always allowed to live peacefully. They behave like a pride of lions and are very pack-oriented. The males are very much involved in the rearing of the young, which is different than any other breed.

These cats are vulnerable to cold climates and have not been hardy in Denmark. Their coat doesn't provide protection, so they should be kept indoors. Being very close to nature, Sokoke cats have practically no genetic disorders to which other purebred animals are susceptible. The health of Sokoke cats has not been thoroughly studied yet, but standard vaccinations against worms, parasites and various infections are necessary.
