Sokoke Cats - Description
Sokoke cats are moderate-sized and long-legged. They have very dense short coat without any undercoat. Their hallmark is an "African tabby pattern," which can be compared with a cheetah. The most usual colors are light brown, dark chestnut and chocolate. In the wild Sokoke cats can never be white, but domesticated types come sometimes in a white tabby. The body of a Sokoke cat is very muscular and elegant. Their back legs are longer than the front legs; it allows the cats to run very fast. The tail is long and whip-like.
The head of these cats looks rather small with wide muzzle and well defined cheekbones and chin. The ears are rather broad with slightly rounded tips and are held erect. The eyes of Sokoke cats are obliquely placed and almond shaped. The color of the eyes varies from amber to light green and is outlined with a darker color.
Sokoke Cats - Status
Sokoke Cats are very rare, perhaps the rarest cat breed in the world. Only about 100 domesticated individuals are registered and only 30 breeding individuals are scattered all over the world and it makes mating very complicated. The North American Sokoke Association tries to promote the breed. It needs the help of reputable breeders and loving homes for kittens. The place where these cats have originated from - the Kenyan coastal forests - has been almost destroyed. Only a fraction of it is preserved as a national refuge. Only cats imported from the Sokoke district in Kenya can be registered as purebred. In Kenya there are no traditions for cat breeding, so Sokoke cats were developed and studied in Denmark.
